AI Fail: 1-5 California Lawmakers Mistaken for Criminals

The LA Times is reporting that in a test of a proposed facial recognition system designed to help law enforcement identify criminal suspects, 1-5 California lawmakers were erroneously identified as being part of a criminal photo database set.

OK, I can hear the jokes – I mean they ARE lawyers and politicians, so was the machine really wrong? So maybe we should clarify by saying, they haven’t been arrested and/or convicted of a crime, yet, so…

But seriously folks, as government and the public push for more AI to “keep us safe”, it is important to recognize that AI, machine recognition, and machine learning are not the panacea they have been made out to be. A 20% false positive rate is WAY TOO HIGH. Can we agree on that?
