Autonomous Driving Easy Hack

As I’ve written previously, autonomous driving systems are decidedly not ready for prime time, and in fact, represent a clear danger to road safety. While many people have focused on hacks of the onboard infotainment system, the primary hazard is presented by tricking onboard sensors.

I’ve talked about GPS spoofing as one technique, but security researchers in China have done something even simpler and decidedly less “high tech”. They were able to fool the visual lane recognition system by placing some strategic “blobs” on the pavement, causing the car to drive into a “lane” that was not there.
